carpenter bee behavior

Carpenter bees do not eat wood, but cause damage to structures by excavating tunnels in wood for their young.

Cold weather causes many bees to die over the winter. READ AND FOLLOW ALL LABEL INSTRUCTIONS.

Using hardwoods that are less attractive to carpenter bees or making woods less attractive by painting, pressure treating or varnishing is the best preventative control. Males die after mating, while females construct “brood chambers.” The female carpenter bee begins her nest by drilling a perfectly round entrance hole (about 1/2 inch diameter) into the wood. Carpenter bees, however, can hold their own. Carpenter bees do not live in nests or colonies. Large, black bees hovering around and drilling holes into homes, out-buildings, wooden furniture and decks during May and June are carpenter bees. Carpenter bees are species in the genus Xylocopa of the subfamily Xylocopinae. Carpenter bees spend the winter in nest tunnels built by previous generations.

They tend to target lumber that is dry and weathered. Due to the relatively small tunnel that is created, structural damage only occurs after many years of the bees boring new or enlarging tunnels in the same location. Carpenter bees hibernate in vacant nest tunnels during the winter. The common name “carpenter bee” derives from their nesting behavior; nearly all species burrow into hard plant material such as dead wood or bamboo. They hover in the vicinity of the nest and will dart after any other flying insect that ventures into their territory.

After tunneling is completed the bee will create individual cells using bits of sawdust and frass along the length of the tunnel. Carpenter bees then emerge again in April and May to repeat this cycle. Only one generation exists per year.

Backed by reliable knowledge and expertise. They are most often noticed as they bore into wood and create tunnels for egg laying and for protection during the winter.

Big, bold, and buzzing—three innocuous words describing the frightening and seemingly “aggressive” force behind the Carpenter bee.

Fall emerged bees can either create new holes or enlarge holes made previously in order to pass the winter within them. Old nests are used year after year and offspring will often times construct nests alongside old nests.
Saturday: 8:00am – 12:00pm. In nature, dead trees and fallen logs are selected, but in urban areas, decks, siding, rafters, window trim, fascia, wooden furniture, play sets, exposed pole barns and other areas substitute nicely. Carpenter Bee Behavior, Threats, or Dangers. They resemble, and are often mistaken for bumble bees but the most apparent difference is that the carpenter bee has a black, shiny abdomen, compared to the hairy and often yellowish abdomen of the bumble bee. Nest entrances are almost perfectly round and, for the common carpenter bee, about 1/2 inch in diameter. Instead, females bore holes through soft wood to lay eggs in. Carpenter bees may buzz like saws when constructing nests (hence their name), but they do not eat the wood, as they cannot digest cellulose.

3213 Calle Marie Do not eat wood, but cause damage by boring into decaying or weathered wood. First, males are harmless. This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged. Of most concern to homeowners is the potential structural and aesthetic damage that the bees can cause as they bore into wood, particularly if the wood is part of a home, deck or wooden furniture. Carpenter bees got their name because they bore holes into wood to create their homes.
Biology and Behavior. Behaviorally, carpenter bees also are quite unique. This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged. Female carpenter bees can sting in defense if provoked, but males, which may appear a bit more aggressive and territorial, cannot sting. After hours calls will be returned the next business day. Cannot be combined with any other offers.

Carpenter bees chew perfect round holes into unpainted/unfinished wood where they will provide food for 4-5 young, Female carpenter bees do possess a stinger but seldom use it unless they are handled or provoked.

Tunnels usually consist of an entrance hole that penetrates into the wood ½ to 1 inch across the grain of the wood and then turns at a right angle to follow the wood grain for 6 – 8 inches. Carpenter bee nests can often be found in decks, eaves, fascia boards, doors, railings, window trim, and other wooden surfaces. Always use pesticides only in accordance with label directions.

However, despite their bad behavior, carpenter bees are quite harmless and are actually excellent pollinators.

The carpenter bee is a large, robust bee that bores tunnels into the untreated wood of structures. In general, carpenter bees do not pose much of a problem for homes and businesses, but generations of carpenter bees tunneling into the same wood can lead to significant structural damage. They do everything for and by themselves, so their behavior is different from that of a social bee. We'll call you! A common behavior of the males is to approach people if they move quickly or wave a hand in the air.
